Customer protection
Responsible borrowing
Credit used well builds a business. Credit used carelessly can dismantle one. This guide is written to help you decide.
Start with affordability, not the maximum
The most common mistake is borrowing the largest amount offered. Work backwards instead: decide what instalment you could still pay in a poor month, then borrow the amount that produces that instalment. As a working rule, all your loan repayments together should stay below half of your reliable monthly income.
Understand the total cost, not the rate
A rate alone tells you little. What matters is the total amount repayable — principal plus interest plus any fees — and the instalment you must find each period. Our calculator shows all of these, and your loan agreement restates them before you sign.
Match the loan to the purpose
- Short-term stock purchase: a short tenor keeps total interest low.
- Seasonal agriculture: align repayment with harvest income, not calendar months.
- Equipment: the tenor should not outlast the useful life of the asset.
- Never use a loan to cover ordinary household consumption on a recurring basis.
Plan for the bad month
Before you sign, name the specific step you would take if a payment fell due during a slow week — savings set aside, a family contribution, a reduced order. If you cannot name it, the loan is probably too large.
If you fall behind, talk to us early
Late payments may attract charges set out in your agreement and are recorded against your borrowing history. Contact your branch as soon as you foresee a problem. Where the circumstances justify it, restructuring an account is far better for both sides than allowing arrears to grow.
